How do I re-anchor a loose drywall anchor in a hole that's too large?

I was driving in some screw-type drywall anchors to hang a photo ledge and one of them pulled out and now has made a hole in the drywall that's slightly too big. What kind of compound should I use to fill this hole so I can re-seat the anchor properly and get it to hold? Basic spackle? Drywall mud? Some sort of foaming carpenter's glue?
