Once I become EMT-B certified, how easy is it to volunteer?

Is it possible to find a volunteer position? Do I have to be a volunteer fireman as well? Is it even possible to get PAID as an EMT-B? The only reason I ask is that I need 6 months experience with 50 calls as an EMT-B before admission to the Paramedic program. thanks all.
