Traveling from Boston, have car & want to stay in Conneticut very cheaply and take a train/bus into N.Y.C.?

Would consider all options: leave car at an airport, stay in Queens near subway, JFK, upstate N.Y. but we're two college students and need to use the car to get close but have to put it someplace and find hotel to stay cheaply.
