What is Determinant?

So I learned to calculate the determinant in advanced algebra cl, and I don't remember what we used it for , something had to do with inverse function or something... So I get to my physics cl and my teacher uses the same determinant to calculate product of two vectors. So my question is what the hell is determinant. What does it mean? Is it a ration? some kind of relationship of something to something? What?
