Why do we need to warm up the engine before using the car on a chilly morning?

When cold the oil has thickened and part of the engine needs oil to prevent wear and failure. But this is now longer a problem with the new Multi viscosity oils. It takes a short time for these oils to reach vital parts of the engine. It is still a good idea to let the engine run a short time before driving.
