How do you make electric guitar sound like ROCK?

My electric guitar on my aplifier sounds just like an acoustic but ampliifed even if I overdrive it and reverb and everything. I want the music to sound punk rock/alternative, metal, etc.. I want it to sound like rock music not jimmy hendrix soft rock. I want hard rock, how do i do this??
